Response of “Math That Matters”

"How is math related to social justice issue?" We had discussed this topic on social justice class. Compared to subjects like social studies and humanities, it is more difficult for teachers to introduce social justice topic to students in math. Many of us have realized that math can be regarded as a tool to real life, but not many people know if there is any way to teach students about social justice and let them to think about problems around the world in a math class.

However, I am sure that we could teach students about social justice and our planet. For example, we need knowledge of math and statistics in order to obtain information from graph and tables. We could provide students with some data about the Earth and ask them to write or talk about information they could see from the data and give their points of view with these facts about our planet. For early secondary students, teachers could give them word questions such as "if one person could save certain volume of water, how much water will Canadian people save every year" to make students aware about what they could do for the Earth.

Math is a subject but nor limited to a subject, it could be a piece of art for people to enjoy, and it could also be a tool for people to use to know about the world and help others. Math teachers need to aware of this and mention about social justice issue when teaching. No matter which subject do we teach, it is teacher's responsibility to help students in their growing up and guide them to become adults when they graduate from secondary school.

Students learn math not for teachers, their parents and principals, they need to realize that they learn for themselves. One reason is that they will use knowledge towards their future development, another reason is that what they learnt could introduce them to some facts about the world so that they will be more confident to deal with problems when they meet new problems in the future.
