Lesson Overview
|
The lesson is about introducing different types of sushi and their Japanese names without any background knowledge of Japanese.

Class Profile
|
The class consists three or four adults and we do not expect them to have any knowledge about Japanese language. Students are either native English speaker or level 5 ELL.

Curriculum Competencies
|
See photos of different types of sushi and fish, then learn how to pronounce their names in Japanese.
Know about which part of fish is going to be used to make better sushi.

Content
|
Students are expected to know how to eat sushi properly in Japanese restaurants.
They are expected to name different types sushi and might tell the difference between them.

Language Objectives
|
The pronunciation of Japanese in term of Romaji (letters used for JLL to pronounce them).

Photos of fish and sushi, pen and markers.

Warm-up
|
Ask about their favorite sushi or why they do not like sushi.

Presentation
|
Show them photos of sushi and tell them about how to pronounce them in Japanese and its meaning in English.
Tell them about the way to dip sushi into soy sauce.

Practice and Production
|
Hand out a handout with a picture of fish, and ask students to color parts what they think is used to make sushi.
Use thumb-up ways and ask about what is better sushi and have some discussion about it.

Ask them if they change their idea about sushi and why.

Adaptations for English Language Learners
|
If students can spell and read out basic symbol of English, they will be fine. We also have pictures and photos.

Assessment/Evaluation of Students’ Learning
|
Students are not going to be evaluated – they could choose to learn or not learn about it. However, they will find the knowledge helpful when eating in a Japanese restaurant.

Reflection
|
It is related to our daily life (food). People would get happier if they eat better food and good mood would help them work better in their learning.
